Hungary’s PM Slams Poland’s Remarks, Says EU Is Not at War with Russia
(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban sharply criticized his Polish counterpart, asserting that neither Hungary nor the European Union is at war with Russia over Ukraine. His remarks came in response to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s strongly pro-Ukraine speech at a Warsaw security forum on Tuesday.
“Dear Donald Tusk, you may think that you are at war with Russia, but Hungary is not. Neither is the European Union. You are playing a dangerous game with the lives and security of millions of Europeans. This is very bad!” Orban wrote on X.
Tusk called on EU members to maintain robust support for Kiev, declaring, “We must recognize that this is our war,” as reported by media. He warned, “If we lose this war, the consequences will affect not only our generation, but also future generations – in Poland, throughout Europe, in the United States, everywhere in the world.”
Unlike most EU nations, Hungary has refrained from supplying weapons to Ukraine and pushed for diplomatic solutions. Orban has vowed to resist attempts by what he calls “warmongering bureaucrats in Brussels” to drag Hungary into a full-scale conflict with Russia.
Tensions between Hungary and Ukraine have escalated, with Hungarian diplomats frequently clashing with Ukrainian officials on social media. In August, Budapest sanctioned Ukraine’s top drone commander, Robert Brovdi, after repeated strikes on a Russian pipeline supplying oil to Hungary. More recently, Hungary blocked access to 12 Ukrainian news websites, responding to Kiev’s ban on two Hungarian media outlets.
The dispute underscores deep divisions within the EU over how to handle the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
